The art collection is located in the rooms of the Palazzo dei Canonici. The works on display include some magnificent examples of Gothic and Baroque jewellery, an interesting section of Medieval and Renaissance wooden sculpture and paintings ranging from the late 13th to the 18th Century with some superb examples: a triptych by the Master of the Assumption of Amelia, a diptych by Cola Petruccioli, some panels of the choir by Zaccaria di Filippo Mazzola, brother of the more famous Mannerist painter Parmigianino, and a splendid fresco by Andrea d’Assisi called Ingegno.

VISITE GUIDATE

The operator will guide visitors to discover the rooms of the Villa by telling the story of the archaeological discovery and outlining its historical and architectural aspects. The functions of the various rooms, the refinement of the mosaic details and the wall decorations will be described. Finally, the past of extraordinary wealth and opulence of the Villa in Roman times will be recalled through the testimony of the mosaics.

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN

The proposed educational offer aims to explore the technique of mosaic art, how the mosaic was made, which workers worked on it and what was the function of the “mosaic carpets” in the decoration of the rooms of the Roman domus.

For the little ones there will be a treasure hunt, inviting young visitors to discover the details of the mosaics by exploring the Villa.

The Treasure Hunt, a team game to discover the Villa of the Mosaics. The operator will accompany visitors by telling and describing the mosaics of the Villa, he will invite a careful and meticulous observation so as to grasp, also through logical reasoning, the details that must be found. From observation, the visitor is led to think about the history of the archaeological site, the surrounding area and the flora and fauna that still characterize it today. The operator will lead visitors to observe how the ancient workers managed to give movement, tension and volume to the figures represented. The treasure is the Villa itself, with its peculiarities and uniqueness.

The operator will tell the visitor about that “imaginary bridge” that is created between the mosaics of the Villa and the peculiar vocation of Spello which is “City of flowers”, the visitor will be accompanied in search of the roses of the peristyle and will be invited to reproduce them.

HOW TO GET TO

VILLA DEI MOSAICI Spello (PG), in Via Paolina Schicchi Fagotti, n ° 7. CIVIC and DIOCESAN ART GALLERY Spello (PG), in the Cortile dei Due Campanili, Piazza G. Matteotti. FROM FLORENCE: take the A1 motorway, exit at Valdichiana, take the SS.75 Bis del Trasimeno which runs along the lake of the same name. Continue to Perugia / Ponte San Giovanni towards Foligno. Exit at Spello. FROM CESENA: take the E45 freeway, pass San Sepolcro, Città di Castello, Umbertide, until you reach the Collestrada junction, continue towards Foligno, exit at Spello. FROM ROME: take the A1 motorway, exit at Orte and take the direction of Terni / Spoleto continue towards Foligno, then immediately exit at Spello. FROM ROME: take the A1 motorway, exit at Orte and, before arriving in Terni, take the E45 highway that will take you to Perugia Ponte San Giovanni. Continue towards Foligno, then exit at Spello. IN SPELLO: follow the signs for the city centre up to Via Martin Luther King, where there is a large car park
